August Festivals in Calgary

Calgary loves a good festival—we’re home of the Calgary Stampede after all. To the world, that may be all they see, but for us locals the opportunities continue all summer long. The first Monday of August even begins with the Heritage Day Festival.

At family-owned Century Roofing Limited, our family, employees, suppliers, customers and potential customers still have plenty of outdoor summer festivities to enjoy—regardless of your taste or interest, there’s something for everyone in Calgary. Two of our favourites also happen to be two of the more unusual Calgary summer events.

The first took place on August 13 and 14 at North Glenmore Park, when the Calgary Dragon Boat Race and Festival celebrated its 25th Anniversary of Dragon Boating. Calgary witnessed over 1,850 competitors, representing 58 teams, and over 4,000 spectators to the Calgary Canoe Club.

Next is the fourth Opera in the Village, produced by the Calgary Opera—a musical accomplishment limited to a very few Canadian communities. The event features very affordable ticketed events and a free outdoor event, being managed a bit differently in 2016.

This year’s Opera in the Village is a scaled-down version of the event held the previous three years. The massive 900-seat outdoor theatre tent will be replaced by a 350-seat Chautauqua tent, as the East Village is growing by leaps and bounds and the physical space along Riverwalk Plaza does not exist anymore.

On August 20 and 21 at 1:00 PM, Calgary Opera’s Emerging Artist Program alumni will perform the 50-minute, family-oriented opera Hansel & Gretel by Engelbert Humperdinck (adapted by Aaron Coates). Tickets are $15.

Then, to close, each day at 7:00 PM, the Calgary Opera presents Cowtown Opera’s hilarious adult show Archiebaldo, with tickets priced at $25. For the free entertainment happening every hour, on-the-hour patrons are asked to register in advance for the first come, first-serve seating.

The dragon boat competition illustrates comradery, teamwork, and inspiration. Opera in the Village represents the creativity and tenacity found daily in Calgary. Together they capture the spirit of Century Roofing Limited, having built a solid reputation for quality workmanship and commitment to customer satisfaction over 35 years.

In an era of fly-by-night roofing contractors, we are proud of our soaring referral rate, just as the performers and rowers are proud of their performance because they know it makes Calgary a better place to live.
