When to Replace Your Siding on Your Calgary Home
When we say siding or wall cladding, we are discussing the exterior material applied to the walls of a house or other building meant to shed water, protect the walls from the effects of weather, insulate, and is often key in the aesthetics of the structure. Siding may be made of wood, metal, plastic (vinyl), masonry, or composite materials. Siding may be formed of horizontal or vertical boards, shingles, or sheet materials. In all cases, avoiding wind and rain infiltration through the joints is a major challenge, met by overlapping, covering or sealing the joints, or by creating an interlocking joint, such as a tongue and groove or rabbet.
Brand new home siding can last a long time, and in some cases where vinyl is the material of choice, it’s even guaranteed for life. However, when you start to notice certain signs of wear and tear, it’s important to get it fixed before it turns into a larger issue that could wreak havoc underneath your siding. Here are a few signs that a home’s siding needs attention before potentially catastrophic damage takes place.
Frequent painting, siding that is chipping, pealing, or cracking is an indication that there is a fundamental problem and that the siding needs replacement.
High heating and cooling bills, poorly performing siding and low-grade wall insulation can be a prime cause for excess heating and cooling bills.
Rotting or warping, take some time to do a thorough visual inspection of a home’s siding. If the layer under a home’s siding has begun to rot or become soft, that is a sure sign that the home’s siding is due for immediate replacement.
Cracked or loose siding, one or two boards may be replaceable by the homeowner. If large numbers of siding pieces are loose or show signs of cracking, this can indicate severe problems that may require professional services.
Peeling paint or loose wallpaper inside the home can be symptomatic of faulty siding as moisture is allowed to seep its way underneath the siding and through wallboard, eventually causing significant damage to the interior walls of a home.
Fungus, mould, or mildew on a home’s siding, especially at or near seams in the siding, may indicate that water is penetrating it and being held inside the wall, causing unwanted growth.
Severe fading, most siding is formulated to hold its colour for only as long as the rating of the siding itself.
Bubbles in the siding are an almost certain indication that water has become trapped on or under the siding.
Holes, are caused by damaging insects. The holes they make also allow rain and snow to get into and, eventually, underneath the siding.
Dry rot begins below the surface of the siding and eats away the main body of the siding, basically leaving just the top layer of the siding intact.
Finally, a word of caution: replacing siding may look simple, but cutting and fitting siding so that it is waterproof and windproof takes a certain amount of experience.
