How to Know if Your Roof is in Good Shape: A Checklist from Your Local Roofing Experts in Calgary
Keeping your roof in good condition is an essential part of making sure it lasts and keeps your building structure secure. Without regular maintenance, even the best roof can suffer the effects of disrepair. Century Roofing Limited is the contractor to call when you need repairs to your roof. We are also happy to inspect your roof for signs of damage. Often, catching issues early can prevent the need for expensive repairs later.
What to Look for When You Inspect Your Roof
Before you contact us to examine your roof, you may want to take a look at it yourself. If you are simply doing a routine inspection, you could find that your roof is in excellent shape. If you are checking your roof because you have reason to suspect that something is wrong with it, we can offer tips on areas to inspect. By viewing your roof before you contact us, you may also help us to know which part of it to examine first.
Remember that your safety should always be your top priority. You do not need to climb on your roof to inspect it for issues. With a pair of binoculars, you should be able to see your roof quite clearly.
Use the following checklist for your roof inspection:
1. Start Indoors – The first place to begin your inspection is inside your home. If you have an attic, look there first. If you do not have an attic, you can view the ceilings throughout your home. Signs to look for include visible indications of leaking, such as watermarks on the ceilings or high on the walls. If your home has a chimney, examine it for signs of daylight. You should also search for water stains near vents or vent pipes.
2. Gutters and Downspouts – The next place you should check is the gutters. If your roof is made of asphalt shingles, you might see some granules in the downspouts and gutters. A minimal amount of these should not be a cause for concern. However, if you see quite a bit of accumulated granules, some of the shingles might need to be repaired.
3. Flashing – After you examine the gutters, look at the flashing. The flashing consists of pieces of metal used to protect your roof’s edges and curves. If the flashing is damaged or part of it is missing, moisture could get under the shingles. This can lead to structural damage and leaks.
4. Shingles – Lastly, you should inspect the shingles themselves. If you notice that shingles are missing, broken, or otherwise damaged, you will need to call a professional. Shingles that flap in the wind may indicate that the underlying sealant strip has been damaged. Look for signs of curling shingles as well. Shingles may become curled or cupped if an attic has poor ventilation. Once they sustain this kind of damage, they are no longer providing the protection your home needs from a roof.
