Roof Maintenance: Keeping Eavestroughs Clear

Eavestroughs, or gutters, are an integral piece of your home’s well-being, serving to control the flow of rainwater and protecting your roof, walls, foundation and landscape from damage.

At Century Roofing Limited, our Calgary roofers have the experience and skills to tackle any roofing problem or eavestroughs repairs. Our roof maintenance approach ensures our roofing contractors clean and remove all the debris that has accumulated, and we clean up the job site before we leave – preventing damage while repairing any that exists.

A gutter clogged with leaves, sticks, and other debris can cause a leaky roof or water damage to the interior or exterior of your home. Issues caused by clogged gutters include basement water problems – as roof water overflows and accumulates around the foundation, excess water against the foundation can weaken the footings and lead to cracks; clogged gutters and downspouts can also cause driveway and walkways to sag and crack; the moisture can also affect the roof sheathing and framing beyond the fascia, the debris acts like a wick and brings water in the bottom of the gutter up to the fascia; and where water pools, mosquitoes breed, mold grows, and even birds, bees, and mice will make a home in gutter debris.

Cleaning your gutters of leaves and other debris once or twice a year can protect your home from water damage – especially in the autumn, after the leaves have fallen but before it snows. How often to clean your gutters seasonally is based on how often leaves in your area fall and the types of leaves that fall all year-round. Leaf guards significantly decrease the need for gutter maintenance, but it’s still a good idea to do a visual check each year.

Although cleaning gutters is a task most homeowners can do themselves, it can be dangerous work. According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, falls from ladders sent more than 240,000 Americans to hospital emergency rooms in 2009. Before climbing a ladder, be sure it’s sturdy and all the steps are in good condition. Climb the first two steps to determine if the ground is level. For soft soil, place plywood under the legs of the ladder. You should also make sure not to rest the ladder on the gutters themselves because the additional weight can cause them to collapse.

Safety is critical, so is having a professional who knows what they’re looking at and can stop the problem before it gets worse. During cleaning, Century Roofing’s professionals remove all debris from the roof, gutters, and downspouts, while checking and repairing any loose gutter spikes. Century Roofing Limited also carries liability insurance and workers’ compensation insurance for our employees.
